Part 3: Savior Like a Shepherd Lead Us

This week’s set will include a song written in the 1800’s. While we do not know for sure who wrote the lyrics to “Savior Like a Shepherd Lead Us” (Commonly believed that Dorothy A. Thrupp wrote them in 1836) we do know that William Bradbury wrote the music for the hymn in 1859. Like Bradbury’s other somewhat famous hymn, “Jesus Loves Me”, Savior Like a Shepherd Lead Us was originally written as a children’s hymn but quickly turned out to be a song enjoyed by kids and adults alike. The hymn is a very simple progression with lyrics taken from Psalm 23 and John 10 in which Jesus refers to himself as the “good shepherd” who “lays down his life for the sheep”. Like sheep we too are in great need of a good shepherd to guide and direct our paths and lead us in this life. If we stray He will find us, if we are weary He will carry us, if we are injured He can heal us, if we are hungry He can feed us, if we are afraid He can bring us peace and comfort, when we are attacked He will defend us! What an awesome reminder of His great Love for us! I hope you enjoy this precious hymn of the Faith.

Savior Like A Shepherd Lead us (1859)

Savior, like a shepherd lead us, much we need Your tender care; In Your pleasant pastures feed us, for our use Your folds prepare. Blessed Jesus, blessed Jesus! You have bought us, Yours we are. Blessed Jesus, blessed Jesus! You have bought us, Yours we are.

We are Yours, please befriend us, be the guardian of our way; Keep Your flock, from sin defend us, seek us when we go astray. Blessed Jesus, Blessed Jesus! Hear, O hear us when we pray. Blessed Jesus, Blessed Jesus! Hear, O hear us when we pray.

You have promised to receive us, poor and sinful though we be; You have mercy to relieve us, grace to cleanse and power to free. Blessed Jesus, Blessed Jesus! You have loved us, love us still. Blessed Jesus, Blessed Jesus! You have loved us, love us still.
